I love my gym, but not only is the music they play there not
loud enough (because they anticipate some people listening to their own music
on headphones), they play some very un-energizing tunes. When “Total Eclipse of
the Heart” came over the speakers a few months ago, I knew I would have to make
my own workout playlists and buy some of those cool Jay-Z Aviator headphones.
(Unfortunately, I do not have $150 to spend on headphones so I just had to
settle for my old $10 ones.)
People listen to all kinds of music while they exercise.
Rap. Rock. Jock Jams. The Space Jam soundtrack. Pretty much the only criteria
is that the music helps you get pumped up. (And no, I don’t really listen to
the Space Jam soundtrack… well, maybe just the Space Jam theme song!)
Without further ado, here’s a list of 50 songs I listen to
when I work out. You can download them (legally, of course) and put them in a
playlist called “Jeff’s Super Cool Workout Playlist”. Then you will become
strong and fast like me.
50 Songs To Work Out
To:
Awolnation - “Sail”
The Naked and Famous - “Young Blood”
Kavinsky - “Nightcall”
Want to feel like Ryan
Gosling in the movie Drive? Just listen to this song!
Skrillex - “Bangarang”
Fun Fact: Skrillex has
won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance Album two years in a
row.
Katy Perry - “Dark Horse”
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - “White Walls”
Icona Pop - “I Love It”
Crash your car into a
bridge? Don’t worry about it; just let it burn. Icona Pop doesn’t care. This
song is like Modest Mouse’s “Float On” except it’s a dance song sung by two hot
girls and not by a bunch of average-looking hipster guys.
Icona Pop - “Good for You”
The Rapture - “How Deep is Your Love?”
Macklemore - “And We Danced”
Karmin - “Acapella”
Death Grips - “I’ve Seen Footage”
Jay-Z & Kanye West - “Ni**as in Paris”
Kid Cudi - “Erase Me”
Relationships are
clearly very complicated for Kid Cudi.
The Notorious B.I.G. - “Hypnotize”
Eminem - “Lose Yourself”
This song is basically
tailor-made to work out to. Also, it makes me want to go spit mad rhymes.
Eminem - “Without Me”
Flo Rida - “How I Feel”
Kanye West - “Love Lockdown”
Kanye West was having
love trouble. This song was pre-Kim K. of course.
Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz - “Get Low”
There is no excuse for
having this song on this list. The music video makes me even more ashamed for
including it. (Also great: The fact that the official music video is edited,
resulting in the song being even more ridiculous.)
Reverend Run - “Mind on the Road”
If it’s good enough to
be background music in Madden ’06, it’s good enough for you.
Rick Ross - “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)”
50 Cent - “In Da Club”
Waka Flocka Flame - “Grove St. Party”
Tone Loc - “Wild Thing”
After “Wild Thing”,
Tone Loc went on to become extremely famous, writing countless other hit songs.
Not.
Snap - “The
Power”
Young MC - “Bust a Move”
The best lyrics ever:
Your best friend Harry
has a brother Larry
In five days from now
he’s gonna marry
He’s hopin’ you can make
it there if you can
Cause in the ceremony
you’ll be the best man
Tag Team - “Whoomp! (There It Is)”
Len -“Steal
My Sunshine”
Garvey - “Goodbye Horses”
Yeah, that’s right.
“Goodbye Horses”. Just listen to this song and try not to think about that
scene in Silence of the Lambs. It’s got a good beat to lift to.
Nelly - “Ride With Me”
You can find this song
on one of those NOW CDs.
La Roux - “Bulletproof”
Grouplove - “Tongue Tied”
Hot Chip - “Ready for the Floor”
MGMT - “Kids”
Ah, MGMT really takes
me back to the good ol’ days pregamming freshman year of college before going
out.
Silversun Pickups - “Kissing Families”
Mark Ronson & The Business INTL. - “You Gave Me Nothing”
Twin Shadows - “Five Seconds”
Against Me! - “Thrash Unreal”
Fun Fact: The lead
singer of Against Me! had a sex change and is now a woman.
Against Me! - “Don’t Lose Touch”
Diamond Nights - “The Girl’s Attractive”
Blink-182 - “Feeling This”
Blink-182 was a very
angsty band!
The Killers - “Mr. Brightside”
The Kills - “Cheap and Cheerful”
Lit - “My
Own Worst Enemy”
Zombie Nation - “Kernkraft 400”
When this song first
starts, you’re like, “What in the world am I listening to?” But then, at around
the 1:10 mark, you realize you’re listening to the most popular sports anthem
of all time.
Britney Spears - “Toxic”
Shortly after this
song was released, Britney married Kevin Federline. Toxic indeed.
Pearl Jam - “The Fixer”
M.I.A., ft. Lil Wayne, 50 Cent - “Paper Planes” Remix
It’s M.I.A.’s “Paper
Planes”…Only they remixed it and made it better.
Cher Lloyd - “Want You Back”
BONUS MUSIC
**Sometimes I lift while listening to mashup artists, namely
Girl Talk and The White Panda.
Both are pretty good since their music is fast-paced and plays like one
continuous track.
Happy listening! Now go work out.
